The Shumi Winery and Tourist Complex is located in the Tsinandali village, Kakheti, Georgia. • In 1997, the Wine Company Shumi started its activities with the cultivation of vineyards in the unique micro-zones of Georgia.
• In 2001, the Shumi Winery was built, and the first grapes were harvested the same year:
The Winery is equipped with the latest generation of technologically advanced facilities, which ensure precise control over all stages of the wine production process; and are considered among the best in Georgia.
The laboratory is equipped with highly sensitive analytical facilities.
The Winery has created a unique wine aging unit.
• In 2002, Shumi created the Georgian Ethnographic Pavilion also at Tsinandali, where ancient Georgian household items and antique winemaking equipment were exhibited.
Our guests and visitors to Tsinandali are offered educational tours, historical and current information, the tasting of our various wines, brandy, chacha and other specialty products as well as the option to attend various master-classes.
The creation of such a place was the first initiative in Georgia, which laid the foundation for the explosive growth of enotourism.
• Since 2002, Shumi wines have been participating in international competitions.
Today Shumi’s products are acclaimed for their quality, they have earned more than 350 prestigious international awards and counting, among them are prizes and medals that no other company in the history of Georgia has ever received.
• In 2003, in order to preserve the integrity of the genetics of the Georgian autochthonous grape varieties, Shumi created the First Private Comprehensive Varietal Collection Vineyard in Georgia.
Shumi scoured Georgia far and wide searching for the diverse grape varieties, and as a result, we rescued several dozen very specific grapes varieties native to Georgia a and saved them from total extinction.
This is the largest private ampelographic collection in the world!
Now there are approximately 1300 varieties of living vines each containing a different and unique variety of grape in the collection. Among these, 33 varieties of grapes still remain unknown in the rest of the world, as scientists have yet to be able to identify them.
In addition to becoming an area tourist attraction, this collection has had tremendous scientific and research value.
Aside from being a tourist attraction, this collection has tremendous scientific and research value The Comprehensive Varietal Collection Vineyard, serving as a foundation for scientific research, is included in the list of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and has its own unique code: GEO036.
At our unique facility, Georgian, French and Italian scientists conduct research and experimental work.
Shumi’s specialists are constantly researching and identifying the potential of rare varieties of vines, some of which, have already begun to be cultivated for the production of wine.
Due to experiments based upon our extensive collection of vineyards, Shumi has created a unique range of amazing grape-based alcoholic beverages, which exist nowhere else in the world!
• In 2005, Shumi created the First Wine Museum in Georgia, which contains ancient household items and the oldest exhibits of winemaking.
The Museum’s oldest artifacts are more than 6,000 years old.
VINEYARDS
Shumi has vineyards located in all of the historically famous and unique winemaking micro-climates of Georgia.
They are: “Didkure” in Napareuli, “Nadarbazevi” in Mukuzani, “Nadolobari” in Kindzmarauli, “The Valley of Roses” in Tsinandali and others.
Many of the vineyards are surrounded by wild nature.
While tending and cultivating our vineyards, we consider it our duty to maintain a delicate balance between nature and humans.
Shumi is the first company in Georgia to strictly use organic, bio- and bio-dynamic methods of cultivation which is neither harmful to the soil, nor is it contaminating the surrounding wildlife.
